The war has lasted for 58 days. On Sunday, December 3, Israel carried out new strikes on the Gaza Strip, where the toll of Palestinian victims has continued to rise since the end of the truce with Hamas. The Islamist movement’s health ministry reported 316 dead and 664 injured “during past hours”. The Israeli army, for its part, announced the death of two soldiers in the fighting in Gaza, bringing its total losses to 72 deaths since October 7. Here’s what to remember from this day.
Israeli strikes continue
The Israeli army indicated that it had carried out strikes on “terrorist targets” in the Gaza Strip. Since the end of the truce on Friday, it has increased air raids on the south of the enclave, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have gathered in the hope of escaping the war. Strikes on the far north of the Palestinian territory also took place on Sunday morning, according to AFP journalists.
In response, at least one salvo of rockets was fired toward Israel, claimed by Islamic Jihad, Gaza’s other major Islamist movement. She was intercepted, AFP journalists noted in the border town of Sderot.
The Israeli army also claimed on Sunday to have destroyed “around 500 tunnel shafts” of the more than 800 that it says it has identified since the start of its land campaign on October 27. “There is no other way to win than by continuing our land campaign”, underlined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In retaliation for the October 7 attack, Israel vowed to“annihilate” Hamas.
The human toll increases in the Gaza Strip
The Hamas Health Ministry announced on Sunday that Israeli bombings had killed 15,523 people – 70% of them women and children – and injured 41,316 in the Gaza Strip since the start of the conflict. A report that franceinfo cannot confirm, due to lack of independent verification on site.
Without calling into question the right of their ally “to defend oneself”the United States warned Israel against increasing civilian casualties. “Too many innocent Palestinians have been killed”insisted American Vice-President Kamala Harris since COP28 in Dubai, alarmed by images “devastating” of Gaza and calling on Israel to “do more to protect innocent civilians”.
“We completely agree that far too many people were killed in this war and would still be alive” if Hamas had not launched its October 7 attack, Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy responded on Sunday. According to Israel, 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed on October 7.
Overflights of British planes to spot hostages
The UK announced plans on Sunday to carry out surveillance flights over Israel and Gaza to help locate the hostages, some of whom are British.
During the October 7 attack, around 240 people were kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip. One hundred and thirty-seven hostages remain detained, after the death of 5 of them and waves of releases during the seven-day truce with Hamas.
Hundreds of people gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday to demand the release of the hostages. Four ex-hostages spoke to the crowd via video broadcast to recount their conditions of captivity. “Our daughters saw things that children of this age, or any age, should not see”said Danielle Aloni, 45, released on November 24 with her five-year-old daughter.
France calls for a “lasting truce”
“The urgency must be a lasting truce between Israel and Hamas.” This is what was said on Sunday on the website of The gallery Catherine Colonna and Sébastien Lecornu. For the very first time, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Minister for the Armed Forces sign a joint text to defend France’s positions in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. For the two members of the government, “France plays a decisive role in achieving the release of the hostages”but also for “to stop the escalation of violence in the region and to defend its interests and values”.
