The Montreal Canadiens lost for the second time in a row by suffering a 5-4 loss in overtime against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
Jake Walman gave his team the victory with a slap shot that pierced Jake Allen on the glove side.
CH showed character in this match. After being led 3 to 0 then 4 to 2 during the match, a goal from former Red Wings Gustav Lindström tied the two teams 4 to 4, taking advantage of a goal from Josh Anderson with 3 min 59 seconds left in the game.
This goal was the 20th goal for Canadian defenders this season, a record in the National Hockey League.
The start of the game was particularly difficult for Martin St-Louis’ men, who fell behind 3-0 in the first period. Montrealer Joe Veleno opened the scoring for Detroit, while Christian Fischer, when his teammates were shorthanded, and Daniel Sprong made the red light shine.
Defenseman Justin Barron, taking advantage of a fortuitous rebound in front of Ville Husso’s cage, propelled the puck into the goal to reduce the score to 3-1 just before the first intermission.
Forty-seven seconds after a shorthanded goal from Joel Armia at the start of the second period, Alex DeBrincat gave the visitors a 4-2 lead thanks to a one-timer on a pass from Moritz Seider.
Nick Suzuki, with a one-man advantage, orchestrated the Habs’ comeback during the last engagement by beating Husso with a precise wrist shot.
Goalie Allen made 28 saves on 33 shots in the loss.
The Canadian will host the Seattle Kraken on Monday evening.
