The village of Menditte south of Mauléon will finally have its pediment. It was the last town of Soule not to have one, the town hall is currently working on a project to build one. Except that it will not only be a pediment, but a whole development in the village.
If the idea of the pediment had been started during the last term of office, it was the new mayor Cyril Arhie who pushed it forward by taking the town hall in 2020. With his new team they wanted not only to develop the pediment project, but go further. “We said to ourselves that we were going to ask our inhabitants for their opinion“, explains the young mayor. So with the help of a local cooperative,” Tequio “, they canvassed the inhabitants and then organized a public meeting. 80 people participated, out of the 200 inhabitants of the municipality. “The principle of the meeting was to see with them what they expected from this project, from the town hall and what they needed.“explains Cyril Arhie.
If in this meeting, the basic idea of the pediment was validated, other proposals have been put on the table : a multi-use room, a pétanque court, a playground, an educational orchard. So many proposals that the mayor took into account and added to the initial project. “We mixed everything up, and there we are, we thought we were going to try that“smiles the elected official. Volunteer residents have been integrated into committees for each part of the project and work on it.
A approach welcomed by the inhabitants. From his studio a few minutes from the town hall Gonzalo Etxebarria is delighted: “this is the first time that we have been asked to express ourselves on a project since its inception“, smiles the artist. After having participated in the meetings, he became involved in the commission concerning the educational orchard.”I have a project to do workshops, sculptures around the vegetation“, explains Gonzalo Etxebarria.
A project at 730,000 euros
Necessarily between the pediment and the various arrangements around, the budget of the project impresses: 730,000 euros. Especially since the annual budget of the municipality is around 300,000 euros. But the town has worked with all potential funders and now relies on funding from the region, the department as well as the European Leader Montagne Basque project, and hopes to obtain an endowment from the state.
Work will start next spring, it should last eleven months.
