The Montreal Canadiens agreed to a three-season contract extension with Quebec goalkeeper Samuel Montembeault on Friday.
Montembeault will pocket an average annual salary of US$3.15 million during this contract, which will expire at the end of the 2026-27 season.
Originally from Bécancour, Montembeault played in 10 games with the Habs this season, posting a 5-3-1 record with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. is currently in his third campaign with the Canadiens and his fifth career in the NHL.
Selected in the third round, 77e in total, by the Florida Panthers during the 2015 draft, Montembeault has so far played 113 games in the NHL, with the Canadiens and the Panthers.
The six-foot-three, 222-pound goaltender has 38 career victories since his NHL debut in 2018-19. He had a goals-against average of 3.42 and a save percentage of .897. Montembeault recorded the only shutout of his career on February 23, 2022, against the Buffalo Sabres.
In May 2023, Montembeault won the gold medal with Canada at the IIHF Hockey World Championship, concluding the tournament with five wins, a goals-against average of 1.42 and a save percentage of, 939 in seven parts.
Montembeault joined the Canadiens after being claimed on waivers on October 2, 2021. He played his first game in a Habs uniform on October 14, 2021.
