According to the author of the book Fossil carbon, living carbonthe challenge of COP28 “is to act on the exit from oil and gas”.
A “daily” dependence on gas and oil
He recalls that France has no difficulty in phasing out coal, since it had committed to doing so in 2022 and must do so by 2027. A working document with a view to the final COP28 agreement has was published on Friday to call on countries to decide on a reduction or exit from fossil fuels. If rich countries and China are divesting from coal, they have not done so for oil and gas. “We continue to depend on oil and gas on a daily basis, particularly for transport”, adds Christian de Perthuis. For him, it is necessary to curb the demand for fuels for land and air transport, otherwise “we won’t make it”he concludes.
