French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Qatar on Saturday, the Elysée announced Thursday, November 30, after the COP28 on the climate in Dubai. The French president will meet the emir of this mediator country who plays a key role in the release of hostages held by Hamas.

On the sidelines of the UN conference against global warming organized in the United Arab Emirates where he is going on Thursday, the French president will also have meetings with several leaders of the region in connection with the conflict in the Middle East, among which should include the Egyptian Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and even the Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The release of all French hostages in the crosshairs

The details of his program must be clarified during the day, when he flies to Dubai, but this diplomatic aspect should be substantial. Emmanuel Macron wants to insist on the release of all the hostages, while five French people remain considered as such or missing since October 7. Also on the menu: an extension of the truce negotiated in Gaza with a view to a more lasting ceasefire, as well as a resumption of discussions on the two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian.

At COP28, the Head of State must also take an initiative to push emerging countries to abandon coal as quickly as possible, designated by Paris as enemy number one in the fight against responsible greenhouse gas emissions. of global warming. The French idea is to support these countries in their “just transition”by massively increasing investments in clean energies, whether renewable or nuclear, but also by facilitating the conversion of existing coal power plants.
