On Wednesday, November 29, the Court of Justice of the Republic acquitted Éric Dupond-Moretti in his trial for illegal taking of interests. This is the first time that a serving Minister of Justice has appeared before this court.
Solemn, with slow steps, the Minister of Justice leaves the Court of Justice of the Republic, Wednesday November 29. He has just been released. On his face, Éric Dupond-Moretti shows no emotion and makes no comments. It is his lawyer, smiling, who speaks. “It is the victory of a man, not against an institution, it is perhaps, and I hope so, and we hope for it, the time of harmony rediscovered in the judicial family”declared Me Jacqueline Laffont.
The recognized conflict of interest
The Court of Justice of the Republic considered that Éric Dupond-Moretti was indeed in a situation of illegal taking of interests by having ordered investigations against magistrates who had criticized him when he was a lawyer. On the other hand, according to the Court, he never intended to commit this offense and harm the magistrates. “This conflict of interest was denied, today it is recognized by the Court of Justice of the Republic. This was the wish of the magistrates and their union organizations“, declared Me Christophe Clerc, lawyer for the Magistrates’ Union and the Magistrates’ Union.
