The film The braiddirected by Laetitia Colombani, hits theaters Wednesday, November 29. It is adapted from the director’s best-seller, published in 2017. Six years later, Laetitia Colombani said to himself “completely surprised” by the success of his book. “When you write a novel, you are alone in your bubble for months, even years. You hope to find a publisher. Then, the book escapes you”says this screenwriter and director.
A faithful adaptation
The braid traces the journey of three women, who live on three different continents. These three destinies will intertwine. Asked about the big screen adaptation, Laetitia Colombani entrusts : “I couldn’t imagine adapting it. When I wrote this story, I told myself that the novel form would allow me much more freedom than in the cinema. (…) I was all the more surprised that producers come and ask me to adapt it afterwards.”
The author wanted the adaptation “be very faithful to the book”. “My imperative was to go and shoot in the three countries of the novel [en Inde, en Italie et au Canada] and in the three languages”, she explains.
