(Ottawa) Shopify says its merchant sales for this year’s Black Friday increased 22% compared to the previous year.
The Ottawa-based e-commerce platform says businesses using its software made $4.1 billion in sales last Friday.
The average shopping basket in Canada over the Black Friday weekend was $171.60, with most sales occurring around noon Eastern Time on Friday.
Shopify says the most popular shopping categories in the country were cosmetics, necklaces, shirts, earrings, underwear and socks.
According to Salesforce, Black Friday online sales totaled $70.9 billion globally and increased 2% in Canada from the previous year.
This surge in Black Friday shopping has occurred as inflation and interest rates remain high, weighing on consumers and causing many to seek deeper discounts than usual.
