The last ballot in the presidential election in Chile had a taste of something new, opposing two politicians with extreme positions on the right and on the left. Unheard of since the advent of democracy in the country 31 years ago.
It is an important and unprecedented ballot which took place in Chile on Sunday, December 19. The voters of this Latin American country were called to the polls to decide between the last two candidates for the presidential election, José Antonio Kast and Gabriel Boric. The first defended a policy of the extreme right while the second, also in the extreme, proposed a policy of the left.
Yet in many ways it was an unprecedented election because, since the end of the Chilean dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in 1990, center-right and center-left have occupied this coveted seat of head of state. Quickly stripped, this second round finally made it possible to proclaim Gabriel Boric, president of the country. This former student leader becomes, at 35, the youngest leader in Chile.
