(Laval) “The only hypothesis for me would be that he had a psychosis”: a relative of Jérôme Frigault, the young man accused of having killed his aunt two hours after a police intervention Thursday in Laval, thinks that excessive consumption of speed could be the cause of the tragedy.
“The Jérôme who committed this crime and the Jérôme that I know, they are two different people,” confided his good friend, who prefers to remain anonymous. Nothing seemed problematic before Thursday: the 30-year-old had no criminal record or mental health history, his friend said. It is possible, according to him, that Jérôme Frigault experienced a psychotic episode Thursday evening. This is also the hypothesis of the authorities, according to our information.
Mireille Martin, a 61-year-old woman, died of her injuries after being stabbed in her home in the Vimont district of Laval. Her nephew Jérôme Frigault lived in the same building as her.
She contacted her ex-partner Thursday evening because of the young man’s worrying behavior. Officers from the Laval Police Service (SPL) arrived on the scene. Two hours later, the victim collapsed to the ground in front of his neighbors.
The police had never intervened at this address before this event.
The 30-year-old man was charged with unpremeditated murder Friday afternoon at the Laval courthouse.
Consumption problem
According to his friend, Jérôme Frigault regularly consumed methamphetamine tablets. “I left my partying years behind me, but not Jérôme,” said the young man.
He also wonders if he did not come across “bad stock” which would have led to a crisis.
Because his childhood friend with whom he got into trouble was far from violent, even under the influence of drugs. He is very intelligent and it is hard to imagine him getting angry, he describes.
“I had a hard time believing what happened. It was only when I recognized his car with the Acadian flag on TV that I really realized it,” marvels the man who has been around him since high school.
He was actually supposed to see it recently, but withdrew because he lacked time. Every year, Jérôme Frigault spent the summer in New Brunswick, where his parents still live.
He settled in Quebec about 10 years ago. “I saw him in situations where he had used drugs and there were arguments, and he was never angry. »
He doubts his friend has asked many questions about his habits. “I don’t think he thought much about it or asked for help. Psychosis crossed my mind, because we don’t know what’s in drugs these days. You can come across anything. »
The Office of Independent Investigations (BEI) will not conduct an investigation into this event. “The BEI was contacted by the Laval Police Department. We have all the relevant information for analyzing the file. The conditions and criteria of the law are not met to give it jurisdiction,” according to BEI media relations.
