In return for the release of 50 hostages, the Jewish state has committed to freeing 150 Palestinian detainees. Who are they ? Response elements.

After the agreement reached between Hamas and Israel, the Israeli Minister of Justice published a list of 300 Palestinian prisoners likely to be released in the coming hours. Among them, 33 women and at least 123 minors, most of them awaiting trial. “There is not necessarily a profile. It will really vary between people who are accused of being members of organizations considered terrorist by the State of Israel, and student opinion leaders”explains Thomas Vescovi, independent researcher specializing in the Palestinian territory.

“Reach an agreement quickly”

In this list are active members of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad, some of whom were arrested in 2015 for advocating terrorism or attempted murder. These prisoners were sentenced by military justice. Motis Cristal, a former Israeli negotiator, explains: “The goal was to reach an agreement quickly, so Israel and Hamas worked on something relatively easy.” In total, 6,700 Palestinians are believed to be in prison in the Jewish state. 98% of them plead guilty.
