Singer Shakira and the Spanish prosecutor’s office have sealed an agreement ending the singer’s tax fraud trial, which had just opened in Barcelona, in exchange for recognition of her guilt and payment of a fine of several million dollars. euros, announced Monday, November 20, the president of the Barcelona court.
Financial penalty of 50% of the fraud
As part of this agreement, the Colombian artist receives a three-year suspended prison sentence, which will be commuted to a fine, and a financial sanction of an amount equivalent to “50%” of fraud, he declared at the start of the hearing, in front of the singer who indicated that she recognized her guilt and accepted the sentences imposed.
The prosecution accused Shakira of not having paid her income and property taxes in Spain in 2012, 2013 and 2014 even though she had lived, according to him, more than half the year in the country, the threshold at -beyond which a person must be considered a tax resident. In 2018, Shakira had already paid the amount claimed by the Spanish tax authorities plus interest, i.e. 17.2 million euros.
