The sun is burning in east-central Brazil. It has been as high as 59°C in Rio de Janeiro, fires are still burning and the feeling of suffocation is almost constant. A concert by singer Taylor Swift was mourned by the death of a young woman.
Brazil is facing record temperatures, with nearly 60°C felt in Rio de Janeiro this weekend. In the favelas, the poorest neighborhoods of the city, the heat is even more oppressive. The residents housed in small houses with clapboard roofs try to cool off as best they can. Water has become a precious commodity. Under more than 40°C, workers have no choice, they must continue to work. “It’s very difficult“, testifies one of them. “We take showers very often and drink water.” says another.
The Pantanal in danger
A heat which also caused the death of a young woman, present at the Taylor Swift concert. She died following a cardio-respiratory arrest. Despite the temperatures, the organizers had banned bottled water inside the stadium. Fires are also ravaging the west of the country. The largest wetland in the world is in the grip of gigantic flames, thousands of hectares charred and wildlife decimated. If the Pantanal were to disappear, it would be the end of one of the greatest biodiversity reserves on the planet.
