Elderly people living in the city of Ashkelon (Israel) have no longer dared to go out since the Hamas attack on October 7. Those who were children during the Second World War must rely on the help of volunteers.
More than a month after the Hamas attack, a cultural center for the elderly has still not reopened. It serves as a logistics center for the Latet association (“to give” in Hebrew). Volunteers help Holocaust survivors by delivering them food and hygiene packages, enough to last them for 15 days.
Right now in Ashkelon (Israel), going out is risky, especially when you can’t run in the event of an alarm. In one of the poorest neighborhoods, lives Alice, 89 years old. Like her, 27% of Ashkelon’s population has nowhere to take refuge in the event of an attack. “Every war with Hamas reminds me of what happened a long time ago. Our enemies leave us alone for a while, and all of a sudden, boom”, she explains.

Life has left Ashkelon: the stores are closed, the streets are almost deserted. Zoya, 90, has not set foot outside since October 7. “I try to be strong but I can’t. I’m afraid to go outside, because I won’t be able to reach the shelter in time.”, she laments. Those who were children during World War II know this better than anyone: it will take time for Ashkelon to recover.
