The European Commission says “yes” to glyphosate for 10 more years. She announced it on Thursday, November 16, taking by surprise the 27 countries of the Union which had not managed to agree on a ban on the herbicide.
The European Commission has just authorized, Thursday November 16, the controversial glyphosate for the next 10 years. The decision was taken a month in advance, while the 27 member countries failed to reach an agreement. “I deeply regret this decision”, reacts Renaissance MEP Pascal Canfin. Karima Delli, Greens/European Free Alliance MEP, says “scandalized by the lack of courage” of the Commission.
Ambiguous position of France
France is not opposed to the total use of glyphosate. However, she abstained from the vote. An ambiguous position, defended by the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau. “We cannot be in a regime which is permanently prohibited, without any solution, without any alternative. But wherever we can regulate uses, we must do so”, he maintains. Farmers who still use glyphosate say they are relieved to have obtained 10 years of reprieve.
