Round, colorful boxes, which display tangy flavors, and inside nicotine sachets. Called “pouches”, this is the latest product launched by the tobacco industry. This synthetic nicotine powder, enclosed in a sachet to fit on the gums, appeals to young people. “It’s relaxing, I like it”, says one of them. “Athletes use this to avoid damaging their lungs. It just sends a dose of nicotine to your brain“, explains another.

Tobacco companies claim that the “pouches” do not particularly target young people. However, on social networks, influencers praise their effects, even if it means passing them off as chewing gum. This new product which pushes young people to suck nicotine worries anti-tobacco associations. “It is not without risks, absolutely not. We are working on a product that will make young people addicted to nicotine.”warns Loïc Josseron, of Alliance Contre le Tabac (ACT).
