Washington and London take joint sanctions against Hamas

The United States on Tuesday announced a new round of sanctions, taken in coordination with the United Kingdom, against Hamas officials and affiliates, including a Palestinian Islamic Jihad official.

This is the third round of American sanctions against Hamas since the start of the conflict on October 7.

These sanctions target “the main leaders of Hamas and the mechanisms by which Iran provides its support to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” according to a press release from the US Treasury. Islamic Jihad is participating alongside Hamas in the ongoing fighting in Gaza against Israeli soldiers.

“Iran’s support, primarily through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, enables Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to carry out terrorist activities, including through the transfer of funds and the supply of weapons and weapons. “operational training,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Among those targeted by the sanctions are the representative of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Iran, Nasser Abou Sharif, a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Akram al-Ajouri, as well as a foreign exchange company based in Lebanon, Nabil Chouman & Co, accused to carry out transfers between Hamas and Tehran.

According to the Treasury, Hamas’s global assets are estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.

“The United States will continue to work with our partners, including the United Kingdom, to prevent Hamas from raising and using funds to commit its atrocities,” Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, said in a statement. communicated.

The Hamas attack left around 1,200 dead on the Israeli side, mostly civilians killed on October 7. Hamas also kidnapped some 240 hostages. Since the attack, around 11,200 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive, according to Gaza health authorities.
