Fire at Canadian High Commission in Nigeria reportedly leaves several dead

There have been deaths following a fire at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja, a fire official in the Nigerian capital said on Monday.

Sina Abioye, head of operations for the capital’s fire brigade, says the investigation is still ongoing, but that “people” were fatally injured.

He could not confirm how many people had died or been injured, or when exactly the fire had occurred.

Local media reported that smoke was billowing from the building in Abuja’s diplomatic quarter at midday.

Global Affairs Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to data filed by the department with the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, there were 12 Canadian diplomats stationed in Abuja as of August 2022, as well as 32 employees hired there.

Further details will follow.
