Emmanuel Macron stands as a peacemaker. The Head of State called, Friday October 27, for a “humanitarian truce” between Israel and Hamas to protect civilians in Gaza, believing that the Israeli response must “better target” THE “terrorists”in a position a notch above the laborious compromise worked out by the European Union.

With this request, the French president goes beyond the position expressed Tuesday and Wednesday during his tour of the Middle East, when he limited himself to mentioning a “protection” civilians. “A humanitarian truce is useful today”to prevent “people are totally unjustified victims of this legitimate fight against terrorism”negotiate the release of the hostages, and “solve the problem of hospitals which is very complicated”said Emmanuel Macron.

He is thus showing himself to be more firm than the EU leaders who, after bitter semantic negotiations, had asked in a joint declaration on Thursday for simple “breaks” to facilitate humanitarian aid. “We had a very long debate on a plural or a singular”, the president said in front of the press, in Brussels, after a European summit. To date, the EU is divided between countries insisting on solidarity with Palestinian civilians, such as Ireland and Spain, and Israel’s strongest defenders, such as Germany, Austria and Hungary.
