“Famous Last Words”, CASISDEAD | The duty

About twenty years and some estimated mixtapes after his debut on the British underground rap scene, CASISDEAD launched a first official album which justified all the esteem he commanded from his peers. During the 58 minutes that this dystopian and cruel fable lasts, we remain glued to his expert prose, to his prosody weighing each syllable, to his calm way of rapping, like the formidable storyteller of the turpitudes of drug addiction and this industry of music trading in broken promises. His concept album is made more fascinating by its musical direction, set in a cold wave/new wave setting (Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys sings on Sky Dive) and electro-funk — to paint such a picture, he enlisted the help of a certain Kyle Dixon, composer of the original music for Stranger Things. After the first gloomy songs, melodies and choruses appear, on the incredible grime/funk fusion Pineapple Juice, Actin’ Up (with Desire) or the captivating Marilyn, with Connie Constance. The most unique rap album of the year.
