(Ottawa) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Thursday with representatives of the opposition parties to discuss Canada’s approach to the war in the Middle East.
The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, told journalists that he had had “a more articulate summary of what we can find if we look a little through the international press and then the information notes that we are being prepared” regarding this war between Israel and Hamas.
“What I especially wanted was [de dire à M. Trudeau] : “Ok, but what do you think about that? What is the angle? What is the approach? What is the perception? What is the position of the Canadian government in this context? ”, explained Mr. Blanchet.
New Democratic Leader Jagmeet Singh and Conservative Foreign Affairs Critic Michael Chong also attended the meeting — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was in Nova Scotia on Thursday.
The Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party claim that they had requested such a meeting. Mr. Blanchet believed that a closed meeting could be more productive than heated exchanges in the House, “which are ultimately a little undignified”.
For its part, Mr. Singh’s office indicated that the New Democratic leader had raised the issues raised on Sunday in his letter addressed to Mr. Trudeau.
Mr. Singh then requested an “emergency meeting” with the Prime Minister to “discuss how we can work together to end the violence with a ceasefire, to bring Canadians out of the region, ensure the safe return of all hostages and insist that international law be respected.”
