United States: Meta accused by 40 American states of harming the mental health of young people

Teenagers can’t live without it. Instagram, TikTok or Youtube… Until 95% of Americans aged 13 to 17 say they use a social network, saccording to a study by the Pew Research Center. A third uses it “almost constantly.” Applications that harm the mental health of young people, according to 40 American states, which have launched legal proceedings against Meta. Last May, the Surgeon General of the United States published a report which showed the link between the use of these platforms and the appearance of depressive symptoms, particularly in young girls. They would be more exposed to the risks of cyberbullying and eating disorders.

Meta tried not to be overtaken by TikTok

Two years ago, Metathe parent company of Facebook and Instagram, had promised the addition of tools to encourage teenagers to take breaks, and allow parents to monitor their activities. But at the same time, the group tried not to be overtaken by TikTok. The 40 American states ask the courts to force Meta to put an end to its practices, and demand the payment of fines.
