Filmmaker of the heart

Titled Robert Guédiguian, with a conscious heart this exhibition could be the title of his next film. Because Robert Guédiguian’s stories are essentially anchored in a reality carried by valiant characters. “Cinema must be made with the heart and the conscious. It is an emotion which must provoke intelligence”, he assures.

Of Marius and Jeannette (Price “In some perspective” At 1997 Cannes Film Festival) has Marie-Jo and her two loves (2002), from Travel to Armenia (2006) to Gloria Mundi (2019), in 43 years of career Robert Guédiguian has never let his guard down. Human and political commitment, stories of family and friendship, neighborhood life, all the themes dear to the filmmaker are highlighted in this journey. “It’s Estaque, the Communist Party, working parents and a very young meeting with friends who have remained such as Gérard Meylan, Malek Lamaroui and Ariane Ascaride, his wife and main actress”, explains Isabelle Danel, associate curator of the exhibition.

Personal items

The tour presents video installations, unpublished documents, personal archives and decorative elements. For this exhibition Robert Guédiguian lent storyboards, family photos and even his motorcycle. “She played in ‘Twist in Bamako’ because the film takes place in 1960 and the main character had a motorbike so obviously I lent her mine, she went to Senegal to shoot”, he says.

An exhibition entirely dedicated to a filmmaker during his lifetime is rather rare, but Robert Guédiguian has fun with it. “It’s gratifying! Usually this type of thing happens posthumously. I’m alive and well! It’s quite amusing to be museumized in this way” he smiled.

Proof that Robert Guédiguian is alive and well, he has just finished filming his 24th feature film The Thieving Magpie and his new film And the party continues hits theaters on November 15.
