“Hackney Diamonds”, The Rolling Stones

Crazy dream. What if it could be, in 2023? An album like the Stones released at the most totally Rollingstonian time, 1968 to 1974, let’s say? Well, we have this record. Why is it so good? Because they let go. For others, reinvention at all costs. We’re old, so let’s make some good old Stones brand new. Of course the strings are big, that’s intentional. The guests add more. But yes, Lady Gaga, in Sweet Sounds Of Heavenis a bit much Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter, Elton John does his Nicky Hopkins and Stevie Wonder includes some Billy Preston in his playing. There’s even some Bobby Keyes-style sax! And we have Charlie Watts, not even dead, for two titles where his flexible typing blows us away. Even Paul McCartney, to whom director Andrew Watt gave a doctored Höfner bass and who plays the distortion game to the fullest. We have everything. The Country Stones (Dreamy Skies), the original blues (hi Muddy Waters!), soulful Keith (tell me Straight). And Mick great. Again ! We are granted.
