Several experts and many careful observers have correctly assessed that the West has provided Ukraine with enough aid to prevent it from losing Russia’s all-out and unprovoked war against it, but not enough to wins it.
If the West wants to stop the bleeding — literally and figuratively — it must now provide Ukraine with all the help it needs to win this far-reaching war in the immediate future.
This is clearly the only right and sensible thing to do as Ukraine continues to pay the supreme price by sacrificing civilian and military lives to regain its territorial integrity and protect Europe from the Kremlin’s imperialist plans. If Ukraine does not stop Russia now and win the war, Russia will eventually directly challenge a NATO member country, provoking another world war and forcing Western countries to send their own youth men and women in combat.
A reality check is in order for those who fail to see the full extent and proximity of this very real threat and who, therefore, openly or surreptitiously plead for the West to cease providing military aid to the Ukraine, often repeating the erroneous argument that Ukraine should not receive a “blank check”.
First and foremost, human lives are priceless, and if the West can neutralize the Russian imperialist threat in the very near future without sacrificing its own, leaving only Ukraine with this hellish burden, then it is obvious that he should immediately prioritize this action plan.
Furthermore, although the United States and the European Union (EU) have committed considerable sums of money to support Ukraine, neither, nor anyone else, has given Ukraine a “blank check” during Russia’s war against it.
Indeed, on September 24, 2023, Bloomberg opinion columnist Niall Ferguson put into perspective the aid provided by the US and EU to Ukraine during Russia’s genocidal war with the following revealing facts : “The United States has made bilateral commitments to Ukraine totaling $76.8 billion. Like anything involving the word “billion,” that seems like a lot of money. But this sum only represents 0.33% of American GDP. Looking only at military aid to Ukraine, the United States spent 15 times more as a share of GDP on the Korean War, five times more on the Vietnam War, five times more on the Gulf and four times more for the war in Iraq. »
“Another way to put this war in perspective is to compare the amount the EU spends supporting Ukraine with its spending in response to other recent disasters. It spent 10 times more on the European pandemic recovery fund (awkwardly called NextGenerationEU) and five times more on eurozone bailouts between 2010 and 2012. Since the start of the war, Germany, hetaly and the UK have each spent seven times more on energy subsidies for their own citizens than on aid to Ukraine. »
Finally, it is clear that the longer the war led by Russia continues, the greater will be the inestimable human losses for Ukraine and the higher the total price of this war will be for the West.
This is why Western leaders should not only face this harsh reality head-on by providing Ukraine with all necessary military and economic aid now, but also explain it clearly to their voters and act accordingly to ensure a victory. rapid recovery of Ukraine, our collective peace and security, and, ultimately, prosperity.
