The Israeli army is preparing to intervene in Gaza. It mobilized 360,000 reservists, relatively poorly trained soldiers. Are they ready ? A France Télévisions team went to a military base, where they are preparing.
The Israeli army has opened the doors of one of its training centers to France Télévisions. The setting recreates a combat zone in an urban environment. Soldiers here are preparing to enter Gaza. “We make a reserve of one month per year. When we were called back, we were ready. But of course, we have to work out”, confides a soldier. We must enter every alley and thwart Hamas’ traps.
Counting on new technologies
Officers also say they rely heavily on technology. Thanks to a drone controlled by a video headset, it is possible to see inside buildings. On the base, hundreds of soldiers are divided into different workshops. On a shooting range, they say they are there day and night: more than 1,000 every 24 hours. With these images, the army wants to communicate and show that it is focused on fighting terrorists, and not civilians.
