It was almost 30 years ago. In 1994, Francis Cabrel quickly gave his hit Bullfighting from his eighth album Saturday evening on earth. An essential piece of the artist’s discography in which this native of Agen demonstrates his commitment against bullfighting by giving voice to a bull to denounce this spectacle.
A piece written after attending a bullfight during a stay in Bayonne and which was a huge success. Indeed, the song released as a single sold several hundred thousand copies upon its release. A commercial triumph whose message, however, was not unanimous…

this Monday October 16, 2023: “It wasn’t taken that well, there were mood swings. I was still the ‘traitor’ I think. The ‘traitor’ has his own region“, he began.
And to ensure that this did not alter his beliefs: “But I think the region is on the wrong track because they pass it off as tradition, but the gladiators too, it was supposedly a tradition. We must stop cruel traditions.”
Asked why he wanted to make a bull speak in this piece, Francis Cabrel humbly replied: “It’s a somewhat cowardly way of saying what I think about bullfighting through the eyes of the bull. […] I should have said I don’t like this show, it needs to stop immediately.”he concluded.
