The House of Representatives will vote for its president on Tuesday

(Washington) The American House of Representatives, paralyzed for almost two weeks due to quarrels between Republicans, will vote Tuesday on the election of its new president, according to a notice distributed to elected officials on Sunday.

Congress has two chambers: one, the Senate, is won by Joe Biden’s Democrats, but it is the other, the House of Representatives, in the hands of the Republicans, which is experiencing unprecedented chaos.

The vast majority of the powers of this institution were suspended by the surprise dismissal of “speaker” Kevin McCarthy on October 3, victim of divisions between moderates and Trumpists in the Republican Party.

The conservatives have since been unable to agree on his successor. After a week of high tension, marked by numerous twists and turns, Ohio elected official Jim Jordan, very close to Donald Trump, is currently the only Republican candidate in the running.

But as it stands, he does not have the support of enough of his peers to rise to the perch.

A vote was nevertheless announced for 12 p.m. (2 p.m. Eastern time) Tuesday. Its outcome is more than uncertain.

“It’s time to get to work,” said Jim Jordan on X, urging his colleagues to bury the hatchet and rally around his candidacy.

Hamas’ surprise offensive in Israel has added to the pressure, with the House currently unable to pass any aid to its historic ally.

Joe Biden’s Democratic Party is in the minority in the House and therefore mainly spectators of the chaotic negotiations in Congress.

Unless there is a surprise alliance with moderate Republicans, which could also put an end to this unprecedented situation.
