Israel’s order for residents to evacuate the north of the Gaza Strip has led to “a massive displacement” of people towards the south of the Palestinian enclave, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees reported on Sunday.

Nearly one in two residents has already been forced to flee. Around a million people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip “during the first seven days of the war” erupted between Hamas and Israel, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees estimated on Sunday October 15. “The figure is likely to rise as people continue to leave their homes”she warned.

Israel has urged residents of the besieged Palestinian territory’s north – some 1.1 million people out of a total population of 2.4 million – to flee to the south. The Jewish state intends to strike Gaza City, in the north of the enclave, to destroy the center of operations of the Islamist movement. “Massive displacement from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip continues” since Friday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on Sunday. According to its partners on site, “the number of internally displaced people [de la bande de Gaza] has increased significantly in the last 24 hours”.
