(Hamilton) Sean Whyte’s 48-yard field goal on the final play of regulation gave the British Columbia Lions a 33-30 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday night.
Whyte’s field goal came after former Tiger-Cats quarterback Dane Evans completed the final play from injured starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.
Evans completed all four passes he attempted for 42 yards.
For his part, Marc Liegghio made a 48-yard field goal, which hit the bar but then fell inside, to make it 30-30 in the last minute of play.
Liegghio’s 30-yard field goal at 8:43 cut the Lions’ lead to 30-27.
The Lions (12-5) are tied for first place in the West Division with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (12-4).
Mathieu Betts of the Lions got a 17e sack, a CFL high, in the fourth quarter. This tied the league record for the highest total in a season for a Canadian. The brand is jointly owned by Brent Johnson and Jamaal Westerman.
Adams completed 21 of 30 pass attempts, for 296 yards and two touchdowns, before being injured late in the fourth quarter.
The Lions’ victory gave the Montreal Alouettes (9-7) second place in the East Division, who will host the third-place Tiger-Cats in the Association semi-final on November 4. The Alouettes will visit the Edmonton Elks (4-12) on Saturday.
