(Kansas City) Patrick Mahomes passed for 306 yards, throwing a touchdown pass, and the Kansas City Chiefs won a 16e straight game against the Denver Broncos, this time with a score of 19-8, on Thursday.
Travis Kelce caught nine passes for 124 yards, but the Chiefs (5-1) owe this victory mainly to their defensive unit, which slowed down Russell Wilson and his Broncos (1-5).
Wilson was limited to 95 yards and one touchdown pass, also suffering two interceptions. The Broncos offense only ran for 197 total yards.
Despite everything, the Chiefs’ inability to take advantage of their opportunities in the paying zone almost cost them dearly. Harrison Butker nevertheless made four placements to help his team’s cause.
The first three field goals put the home favorites up 16-0, but a touchdown pass from Wilson to Courtland Sutton with six minutes left kept the Broncos’ hopes alive.
What was supposed to be a one-sided shutout became a one-possession game thanks to the Broncos’ two-point conversion.
The Broncos’ defensive unit, the worst in the NFL, however, was unable to slow down Mahomes. The latter converted a third down and two yards with a 28-yard pass to Rashee Rice, allowing Butker to make a final 52-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining.
The Broncos haven’t beaten the Chiefs since September 17, 2015, when Peyton Manning led the Colorado club to the Super Bowl. This losing streak is the fourth longest in NFL history.
The Broncos will now host the Green Bay Packers on October 22. The same day, the Chiefs will receive a visit from the Los Angeles Chargers.
