In Chamonix, in Haute-Savoie, there are so many second homes that residents have difficulty finding accommodation. The town hall has decided to increase the tax on these residences by 50%.
In Chamonix (Haute-Savoie), second homes represent 70% of housing. Are they partly responsible for the real estate tension? From 2024, their owners will pay more: a 50% increase on their housing tax. For permanent residents, who struggle to find housing, it is justified. “It’s a good measure. There are quite a few second homes, it takes up a lot of space and the people from Chamonix who live here all year round have a hard time finding accommodation”reacts a resident.
2.5 million euros per year for the municipality
In Chamonix, prices reach between 10,000 and 15,000 euros per m2. The mayor has wanted the surtax on second homes for years. It will bring 2.5 million euros to the municipality each year, enough to buy land and create affordable housing for residents. “This is what it was voted for, and this is how it will be applied”assures the mayor, Éric Fournier.
