Russian bombings on residential areas in the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, during the night of Saturday to Sunday October 8, left eleven people injured, including a nine-month-old baby, local authorities announced. Ukraine retook the city in November 2022, but it remains within firing range of Russian troops.

“Kherson experienced another terrible night” because the Russian armed forces “continuously bombarded the city and its surroundings”, said regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin. He posted a video online showing a residential building with damaged windows and walls on several floors.

Volodymyr Zelensky expresses his “solidarity” to Benjamin Netanyahu

The Ukrainian president announced that he spoke by telephone with the Israeli Prime Minister to show him Ukraine’s support for Israel in the face of the attack launched the day before by the Palestinian group Hamas. “I spoke with Netanyahu to express Ukraine’s solidarity with Israel, which is facing a large-scale deliberate attack, and to express our condolences for the many victims”wrote Volodymyr Zelensky on Xadding to have “also spoke about the security implications of the attack in the region and beyond”.

Russia is trying to return to the UN Human Rights Council.

Moscow, which was excluded from the UN Human Rights Council after its invasion of Ukraine, will try to make its return there on Tuesday. This uncertain bet will allow him to assess his support on the international scene. The UN General Assembly will elect 15 new members of this Geneva-based body on Tuesday for the period 2024-2026.

While its 47 members are distributed by major region, each regional group generally pre-selects its candidates, then approved without difficulty by the General Assembly. A few days after the carnage in the Ukrainian village of Groza, where more than 50 people were killed by a Russian strike, Moscow’s candidacy is attracting all eyes.
