Hong Kong authorities further raised the alert level for Typhoon Koinu on Sunday October 8, leading to the closure of transport and schools. The Hong Kong Meteorological Observatory warned of strong winds and heavy rain as Koinu was less than 100 kilometers south of the city. Winds of around 145 km/h were recorded. “Don’t go out and stay sheltered from winds and doors. Find yourself a safe place to stay sheltered”warned the observatory.

The Hong Kong government also reported trees uprooted and six people injured by the typhoon on Sunday afternoon. Schools, daycare centers, freight terminals, ferries and buses have announced that they will suspend their activities for the day or afternoon. Some 90 flights were canceled and 130 others delayed during the day due to the weather situation, according to the city’s airport authorities.

Before heading towards Hong Kong, Koinu made landfall on the neighboring island of Taiwan, bringing torrential rains and record winds. It left at least one dead and left hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity. The passage of Typhoon Koinu comes one month after that of Super Typhoon Saola.
