Coach David Guion was laid off as a precautionary measure after Bordeaux’s defeat against Laval (0-1), Saturday October 7, for the 10th day of Ligue 2. This fourth setback suffered by the Girondins establishes a little more in the second part of the table, with only 11 points and 14 units behind the surprise leader Laval. After coming close to an immediate return to the elite last season, the Bordelais did not hide their promotion ambitions at the start of the year.
Despite numerous arrivals, the Girondins missed their start to the season and remain in four games without a victory, including three without scoring. They could find themselves fifteenth, depending on the other results of the 10th day and are closer to the relegation zone than to the top of the table. However, an increase appears vital, given the structure of the club and the recent investments made.
David Guion, whose resignation had been requested for several weeks by the two Ultras groups of the Girondins, did not resist this negative spiral. The technician, who arrived in February 2022, was unable to prevent the relegation to Ligue 2 of the Marines and Whites but subsequently raised the bar, fighting to climb to the end despite the institutional setbacks of the previous off-season.
Only two teams have emerged in 30 years with this record
This exciting 2022-2023 vintage, with many players from the training center, now seems very distant. The young Junior Mwanga and Dilane Bakwa, for example, left for Strasbourg, and the offensive momentum of last season was rusted by a so far unsuccessful transfer window.
While Guion declared this summer to South West its ambition to offer a game “attractive” and was aiming for the 60-goal mark, his adventure ended with eight goals scored, or less than one per match, and 11 points in the standings. His successor, whose name has not yet been revealed, will have a lot to do: over the last 30 years, only two teams – Dijon and Ajaccio in 2011-2012 – moved up to Ligue 1 with such a meager record after 10 matches.
