The former king of Spain, Juan Carlos, escapes a trial against his ex-mistress who sued him for harassment

The High Court of England did not rule on the merits of the case but its judgment “unsurprisingly confirms his innocence”, welcomed Juan Carlos. The former king of Spain won his case on Friday October 6 against his ex-mistress who was suing him in London for harassment. Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn claimed nearly 146 million euros from him for the psychological damage she believes she suffered after their breakup in 2009.

In October 2020, this businesswoman initiated proceedings in London, where she resided. In its judgment published Friday, the High Court of England and Wales says it does not have jurisdiction “to judge” this case. The complainant reacted to this court decision, in a press release, where she said “deeply disappointed” by this judgment: she judged “demoralizing to see that victims of harassment often have difficulty obtaining justice in our system”. “Juan Carlos deployed his entire arsenal to crush me and his power is immense”she added, affirming to consider “all options”.

After several scandals, Juan Carlos abdicated his royal functions in 2014 for the benefit of his son Felipe VI before going into exile. At 85, he explains that he “voluntarily demonstrates the greatest discretion” until then but that this British judgment “restores the necessary conditions for new public appearances”he wrote in a press release published Friday.
