The fine sand beach of Saint-Augustine, Florida (United States), still bears the traces of the first boats that docked. Five centuries later, the first explorers left the warm waters to tourists. Settlers fought Native Americans
The city is the oldest in the United States. To go back in time, follow guide Chad Light to the archaeological ruins of the Spanish colony, founded by Ponce de León, the first to set foot in Saint-Augustine. To establish themselves, the settlers confronted the Amerindians, already present in this part of the territory. “Cannons and military power are what made it possible to establish themselves in Florida against the natives. Before the Native Americans even had time to think about repelling the Spanish, then the English or the French, it was already too late”says the guide.
