Greater Montreal | Congestion and obstacles on the menu for the long weekend

A long weekend means congestion. It will be necessary to plan a series of traffic obstructions for the Thanksgiving weekend, the most significant of which, announced at the beginning of the week, will force the closure of Highway 20 towards the city center for four days.

This was confirmed Thursday afternoon by the Mobilité Montréal committee, responsible for coordinating major work in the metropolitan region.

First on the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge, between Vaudreuil-Dorion and Senneville, dynamic traffic management, adding a lane in the direction of the point, will not be available from Friday evening to Monday morning. Motorists will therefore have to once again travel in only two lanes per direction.

In Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Highway 40 will be closed eastbound, between exit 41 on Boulevard des Anciens-Combattants and the next entrance, for the three nights between Friday and Monday. The highway service road will also be closed to the west during this work, between the exit for Morgan Boulevard and the entrance to Chemin Sainte-Marie.

Restricted access to the city center

As previously reported, a blitz of work in the Saint-Pierre interchange will notably force the complete closure of Highway 20 eastbound, towards the city center. The axis will be completely blocked between exit 63 for the Honoré-Mercier bridge and the following entrance from Friday evening to Tuesday morning.

Quebec has already warned that congestion will be very high in this sector, which we are calling on to avoid as much as possible, especially since there will be a one-off obstacle on Highway 20 West. It will in fact be closed at night from Friday 10:30 p.m. to Saturday 8 a.m. Only one lane will therefore be available to travel to Dorval and Trudeau airport.

The ramp leading from Route 138 East to Highway 20 West will also have to be closed for the entire long weekend. You will therefore have to go around with Highway 20 East, then turn around at the Angrignon interchange. One lane will also be closed in the Saint-Pierre interchange from Friday to Saturday morning, heading west.

In short, access to the city center is likely to be difficult to say the least, regardless of the location. Even Saint-Jacques Street will be closed during the long weekend, under Highway 20. Traffic will be redirected towards 1^D Avenue or even Avenue Saint-Pierre.

Further east of Montreal, the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel will be closed in both directions overnight from Saturday to Sunday, in order to carry out inspection and concreting work. Avenue Souligny Est will also be closed for the same period of time between Rue Dickson and Rue Honoré-Beaugrand.

Please note: on the Honoré-Mercier bridge, in Kahnawake, the access ramp leading from Route 138 east from Châteauguay will have to be closed during the night from Friday to Saturday. A bypass will be in place via the ramp for Route 132 and then Old Malone Road.

Not far from there, exit 57 of Highway 15 leading to L’Île-des-Sœurs Boulevard will also be closed from 6 a.m. to noon, Saturday, heading south. You will therefore have to continue on the Samuel-De Champlain bridge and turn around at exit 6.
