Municipalities have decided to tax second homes, in particular to recover housing. Example in Dinard, in Ille-et-Vilaine.

In Dinard (Ille-et-Vilaine), more than one in four homes is a second home. So, from 2024, their owners will have to pay more taxes, +44% surcharges on these vacation homes. “Today, we have expenses which have increased so much with inflation that the self-financing capacity and net savings were no longer sufficient to continue to renovate and beautify the city”explains councilor Arnaud Salmon.

3 million second homes

Tax more to try to recover housing… Here, residents are struggling to find housing. “As a native of here, I had to move away to be able to own a property”, indicates a woman. Until now, 1,434 municipalities could vote for this increase in housing tax on second homes. This system has been expanded, there are now 3,697 who can do so. In Sceaux (Hauts-de-Seine), the surcharge already stands at 40% and it will increase to 60% next year. France has more than 3 million second homes.
