Police officers got their hands on “several thousand plants” of illegal cannabis on Friday during an operation to dismantle a site in Pierreville, Center-du-Québec.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) announced in a press release that it had launched the operation at 10 a.m. Friday. The site was “arranged like a field” of cannabis, according to the SQ.
“Despite the implementation of legislative measures authorizing certain activities related to cannabis, the production, possession for the purpose of trafficking, sale on the black market, importation and exportation of cannabis remain criminal or penal offenses. Thus, any cannabis plantation without certification or license issued by Health Canada is prohibited,” specified the police force, which indicated that it has carried out several operations of this type since June.
According to the police, the objective is to ensure “a feeling of security” for the population, in addition to preventing these illicit activities from “generating income which can be used to finance the activities of criminal organizations”.
