A festival entirely devoted to rap is rare in France. Which may seem surprising given the place of rap today on social networks and on the radio. So the Clermont-based label and tour operator Flower Coast decided to create a festival entirely dedicated to it. 17 artists are invited to perform in five different locations.

A pool of rappers in Clermont-Ferrand

It’s a big rap festival that begins at the cinema, with the screening, this Wednesday, September 27, of the cult film Hustle & Flo. A 2005 feature film inspired by the life of American Tommy Wright III, one of the veterans of Memphis rap. The evening will continue with a first concert by a local artist, Ashéo, who in 5 years has managed to make a name for himself in the world of rap. “There are plenty of rappers of all styles in Clermont-Ferrand. It’s still quite unknown to the public in France but the region is a real breeding ground” he says. These artists made in Clermont will rub shoulders with headliners for four days. “Bringing together local, national and international artists is about sharing and exchanging. It’s something that touches me and pleases me” Ashéo enthuses. Among these rap stars, there is Crystal Millz. She is one of the emerging artists on the British hip-hop scene. The public will be able to hear his hoarse voice at the Coopérative de Mai on Friday September 29. Just before his concert, a promising young French rap artist will warm up the room, the Lille native Sto.

40 years of rap in France

“There are plenty of artists who deserve to be highlighted to show what they have to defend” explains Yacé, the Festival organizer. Hustle & Flower is also celebrating a double anniversary, half a century of rap in the United States and four decades on our territory. “There are so many different raps, 40 years after his arrival in France, that it seemed logical to us with Flower Coast to create an event of this style here” explains Yacé. The festival will close its doors on September 30 at Rimshot with Sheng, a French artist of Chinese-Lebanese origin, who raps in Mandarin and French. A concert full of beautiful musical surprises in perspective.
