The recent positions of the CAQ government regarding abortion are very misguided. Going so far as to claim to want to “sacralize” the right to abortion is clearly counterproductive, in that it will tend to fuel an unhealthy propensity for the polarization of public debates.
The part for abortion is intended to be one of reasonable compromise, it is important to keep things in their proper perspective and not give in to the simplistic temptation of extremes. It is entirely possible, even desirable, to consider the serious disapproval of the so-called defenders of life as legitimate, if not desirable, while nevertheless drawing up the lucid observation that while it is regrettable to have to carrying out an abortion is much more difficult to seek to impose the prolongation of an unwanted pregnancy, against the will and interests of every woman.
As evidenced by the climate of polarization that reigns in the United States, both in civil society and in the political arena, we would be on the wrong track by peppering our discourse with the same type of Manichaeism that has always divided the American population; we are better off sticking to the nuanced path of the lesser evil as an antidote to extremism.
