The Paris prosecutor’s office has requested a trial against the National Rally over the management of public funds. 27 people are suspected of using European Union money to pay assistants working for the party.

The investigation began in March 2015. The European Parliament referred the matter to the European Union’s anti-fraud body and targeted MEPs from the National Front (current RN). According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, a dozen people declared as parliamentary assistants would have worked directly for the far-right party. This would constitute a misappropriation of the 21,000 euros monthly allocated to each person.

11 deputies concerned

The facts concern 11 deputies, including Julien Odoul, deputy and spokesperson for the National Rally, Louis Alliot, Bruno Gollnisch, Nicolas Bay and Wallerand de Saint-Just. In 2017, Marine Le Pen was indicted for breach of trust and complicity. The facts were reclassified as embezzlement of public funds. Parliamentary assistants and four FN collaborators could also be tried. 10 years in prison and several million euros in fines could be required against several members.
