Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to the UN on Wednesday September 20. The confrontation between the Ukrainian president and Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, did not take place. Live from the France 24 editorial team, journalist Baptiste Fallevoz explains: “When Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at the start of the session, Sergei Lavrov was not there. He was replaced by Russia’s representative on the Security Council.”
Towards a reform of the Security Council
The Ukrainian President “spoke out and launched a fairly violent attack against Moscow, but also against the UN and its dysfunctions (…), notably its right of veto”explains Baptiste Fallevoz who recalls that Russia has a right of veto allowing it to “block all resolutions which condemn its aggression in Ukraine”. Volodymyr Zelensky wants Russia excluded from the Security Council.
