COVID-19 continues to progress in Quebec, increasing pressure on hospitals. The province currently has 1,135 people hospitalized positive for the coronavirus.
All indicators used to monitor the progression of the pandemic have been increasing since mid-July. Quebec is currently detecting 464 cases per day on average using PCR tests, up 17% over one week.
No less than 18% of PCR tests carried out over the past week have turned out to be positive for COVID-19. This is the highest rate since the Omicron wave, which occurred in winter 2022.
This back-to-school wave is having repercussions in hospitals, where the number of positive patients is increasing rapidly. Over the past week, there have been 140 more, for a total of 1,135. The impact of the currently circulating variant, however, seems more limited to intensive care, where there are only 19 positive patients.
Still, the wave is not without consequences. Quebec currently deplores seven deaths per day on average. As since the start of the pandemic, deaths are concentrated among seniors, particularly those aged 80 and over.
Moreover, 88 CHSLDs are currently in an “active outbreak”, as well as 55 hospital centers.
