(Guadalajara) Eugenie Bouchard and Leylah Fernandez won their first round match on Sunday at the Guadalajara Open, Mexico.
Bouchard advanced to the second round by beating Renata Zarazua 6-1, 7-6 (4). Fernandez beat qualifying American Asia Muhammad 6-1, 6-3.
Bouchard seemed headed for an easy victory after the first set, but Zarazua found his game afterward. She almost forced a final set, but failed to win the extra points in the tiebreaker.
Bouchard made five aces in a match that lasted an hour and 30 minutes. His opponent committed three double faults and did not make an ace.
The Quebecer won 43 serving points and nine serving games. Bouchard even won five games in a row at one point.
Fernandez had three aces, despite five double faults.
She had a five-game winning streak, including 10 straight points, in a match that lasted one hour and six minutes. The Laval resident will face the 13e seeded Elise Mertens, Monday.
