One of the government’s promises to reduce hunting accidents comes into force. The surprised hunters, weapon in hand, “obviously intoxicated” are now exposed to a fifth class fine, i.e. a fine of 1,500 euros or 3,000 in the event of a repeat offense, according to a decree published in the Official Journal on Sunday September 17. The hunting season is already open in several departments.
This ban applies to people carrying “a gun or a bow”specifies the text.
The creation of an offense envisaged
In January, when presenting a plan for the safety of walkers and hunters themselves, the government promised the creation of this fine, but also to work towards the creation of a blood alcohol offense for hunters, which would require a change in the law.
During the 2022-23 season, hunting accidents caused the death of six people, hunters only, “historically lowest figure recorded” according to the French Biodiversity Office. The presence of three non-hunters among the victims of the two previous seasons had put hunting at the heart of public debate, with voices being raised to call for its ban during weekends and holidays.
