Hundreds of volunteers patrolled Montreal’s shores on Saturday, on a mission to free them of accumulating waste. In total, a ton of residue was cleaned up.

“River Day 2023” was organized simultaneously in 11 sectors of Montreal, including Côte-des-Neiges, Lachine, LaSalle, Mercier – Hochelaga – Maisonneuve and Montréal-Nord.

The Regroupement des éco-quartiers and its members, the mandated organizations of the Éco-quartier program, were responsible for the organization. All in collaboration with the Mission 1000 Tons organization.

In total, 250 volunteers participated in various chores across the island of Montreal this year. They enjoyed a sunny and bright day by the water.

All kinds of waste were found on the banks of the St. Lawrence River on Saturday. The most common residue: cigarette butts. “We’re talking about 5,000 cigarette butts collected! », Underlines Jimmy Vigneux, co-founder of Mission 1000 tonnes and leader of Saturday’s mission.

Other very common waste: coffee glasses and plastic bottles. In total, Saturday made it possible to free the banks of a ton of residue, according to Mr. Vigneult.

A Mission 1000 Tons ambassador was also in Togo on Saturday and another clean-up mission took place simultaneously in this West African country, says Jimmy Vigneux.

The action took place as part of World Cleanup Day. On the same day, in 197 different countries, volunteers, governments and organizations come together for a cleaner world, we can read on the event website. In total, 71 million volunteers are mobilized.
