From Monday, and for five days, Autrans, in Isère, will welcome 350 people in precarious situations. These are groups who will come from all over France, with around fifty accompanying people, to take advantage of an event, both festive and awareness-raising, on access to good food for all.

Mélanie Tridon, in charge within the Abbé Pierre Foundation of this “A Place at the Table” operation, details the program: “We are going to offer participants numerous cooking workshops. We will all go together to the Autrans market. There will be a giant picnic at the foot of a ski resort. And for the final banquet, many dishes will have been prepared by the people themselves.”

Day open to the public Wednesday September 20

Culinary workshops, fruit and plant picking, meetings with producers, and a banquet to reestablish social bonds between the 400 guests who will all have a place at the table. Pierre Gagnaire is the sponsor of the event. The chef with 3 Michelin stars and 5 Gault&Millau hats is leading this fight against long-standing hunger. He remembers:

“I’m 12 or 13 years old – we received a newspaper at home called Catholic Life – and on the first page, there is an African woman, with a child in her arms who is dying of starvation. It marked me for life and determined the way I work. The idea of hunger obsesses me. I find it unacceptable that people cannot eat properly.”

If the week in Isère is aimed at people welcomed into the Abbé Pierre Foundation network, it will be punctuated on Wednesday September 20 by a day open to all on the Autrans market, and by a round table around precariousness eating.
